Hilton Worldwide

Hilton’s headquarters are located in Tyson’s Corner, an unincorporated community in the Washington, D.C. area. The world-renowned Hilton name traces back to the son of a Norwegian immigrant. Conrad Hilton, whose early career included a stint as a representative in the New Mexico Legislature and two years in the U.S. Army, bought his first hotel at age 32. In 1927 in Waco, Texas, he would open the first hotel with air conditioning and cold running water. Hyatt Hotels Corporation

Hyatt Robert Von Dehn, the company’s namesake and one of its original owners, sold his Hyatt share to Pritzker, who worked with his younger brother Donald to expand the company. The Grand Hyatt, Park Hyatt, and Hyatt resort brands took off in 1980. InterContinental Hotels Group

IHG is based in Denham, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom. When William Bass opened the Bass Brewery in Burton-upon-Trent in 1777, he had no way of knowing that his pub would blossom into a nationally known brewery brand. As the Bass name was expanding in the UK, Pan American Airways founder Juan Trippe was opening the first InterContinental Hotel in Belém, Brazil, as a division of PanAm. PanAm would sell InterContinental to UK-based Grand Metropolitan in 1981, who then sold it to Japan-based Saison Group in 1988. That same year, the British government passed legislation curtailing the number of pubs one breweries could own, so Bass turned its focus to its small hchain of hotels. In 1990, Bass bought Holiday Inn International, and in 1998 it bought InterContinental. InterContinental Hotels Group became an independent company in 2003. Today IHG has offices in Denham, Atlanta, Singapore, and Shanghai.

Best Western operates about 4,100 properties globally. Independent hotel owners in California created an informal network of referrals that laid the groundwork for Best Western. The chain was officially founded in 1946 by M.K. Guertin, a man who was instrumental in the forming of the network. It earned its name from the fact that most of its original properties were west of the Mississippi River. By 1963 Best Western formed the largest motel chain in the country, and in 1964 they began to expand internationally.
